Newington Cemetery : Research Results
| 1. |
Confirm existence of the burial ground. There
is sufficient evidence in family letters and diaries and in burial information in death
registers to confirm that the Newington Cemetery existed. |
| 2. |
Determine the location of the burial
ground. The death register entry for Joseph CHAMBERS states that he was
buried at Newington on the property of Edmond FERRIS. Examination of maps and Shire Rates
and Valuations shows that Edmond FERRIS' property was the same property known locally as
PACEY's Hill. It is on this property that the commemorative plaque was found - in the same
location as identified by older residents. |
| 3. |
Determine the people buried there. The
following surnames were identified as possible burials in the Newington Cemetery : FERRIS,
CHAMBERS, MATCHIM, LUCKOW, FOX, LING, THOMAS, HARDING.
The following relationships between these families have been established :-
 | Joseph CHAMBERS (snr) and Edmund (Ned) FERRIS were friends - in 1856 the
CHAMBERS family moved from South Australia to join Joseph's friend Ned on his farm at
Newington on the Bellarine Peninsula. (1) |
 | Following the death of Joseph CHAMBERS, his wife Susannah nee SMITH, married
Edmund (Ned) FERRIS. (2) |
 | Martha CHAMBERS, daughter of Joseph and Susannah married Edwin MATCHAN (3) |
 | Priscilla CHAMBERS, daughter of Joseph and Susannah married Theodore Bernhard
William LUCKOW. (4) |
 | Henry Smith CHAMBERS, son of Joseph and Susannah married Emily Frances FOX.
(5) |
 | Susanna CHAMBERS, daughter of Joseph and Susannah married John BUTLER.
(6) |
 | A Jane BUTLER married Mark THOMAS.
(7) Jane BUTLER
could be related to John BUTLER (a sibling?). |
 | A Susanna BUTLER married John LING. Susanna BUTLER could be related to
John BUTLER (a sibling?). Note : John BUTLER and Susanna CHAMBERS had a daughter Susanna
however she was born only a year before the marriage of Susanna BUTLER to John LING.
(8) |
 | No direct relationship has yet been found between the CHAMBERS or FERRIS
families and the HARDING family, however at least one of the HARDING families were
neighbours. |
|
The table following shows the names identified from various sources as possible burials
in the Newington Cemetery. Each entry is identified as CONFIRMED (from death and
burial registers) or POSSIBLE where insufficient evidence has been found to either
exclude or confirm the entry. Most of the "possible" entries relate to babies -
death records for these may never be found as they may have been stillborn babies which
were not required to be registered.
The one entry which has definitely been excluded from the original list is that of
"Grannie FERRIS" who was Susannah FERRIS, previously CHAMBERS, nee SMITH.
Ironically, it was the story of Grannie FERRIS the "herb woman" and local
midwife that was responsible for starting this research and she is the only one definitely
NOT buried in the Newington Cemetery! (See Photo Gallery 2)
From the BARRY Diary and "Chambers Chronicles" we learn that "She is
buried with her daughter Susanna. Story goes that old Susanna wished to be buried with
Joseph in the old cemetery near her wattle and daub cottage. However, it is said that her
daughter-in-law, Ellen (Mrs. Charles Chambers), created a fuss about that and so it was in
the Port [sic] Lonsdale Cemetery that she was buried."
Susanna FERRIS nee SMITH died 19th May 1910 at the age of 94 and is buried
in plot 65 in the Church of England section of the Queenscliff Cemetery at Point Lonsdale.

Edmund FERRIS appears in the Bellarine
Cemetery Register Index at Leopold. A date of death is shown but religion and grave number

is most unlikely that he is buried at Leopold - the death register states that he is
buried at Newington which agrees with all family references. |

Mt. MITCHELL CEMETERY and GANGE FAMILY Burials
Where is Mt. MITCHELL CEMETERY? This question arose as the name appeared more than once
in the file of "Lone Burials" at the Geelong Historical Records Centre,
extracted from the Burial and Death Registers.
There were two entries which showed "Buried Mt. Mitchell Cemetery,
Newington". These were for Joseph CHAMBERS (1862) and Priscilla (Baby) LUCKOW (1885).
As the first of these entries also stated "property of Edmond FERRIS" and this
property was confirmed as being at Newington, and both burials were expected to be found
on this property, it is reasonable to accept that these entries are definitely for the
Newington Cemetery.
The other two entries showed "Buried Mt. Mitchell, Bellarine Peninsula" and
were for two brothers - James Thomas and Daniel Bacchus GANGE.
John Thomas Mitchell GANGE, the father of these boys, was an overseer for Anne DRYSDALE
& Caroline NEWCOMB of Coriyule who gave Thomas a property east of Drysdale known as
"Garringall" in appreciation of his services as Station Manager. (10)
East of Drysdale on a hill between the Portarlington Road and Corio Bay is a lone
headstone - it is on the property known as "Garringall".
The Old Bellarine Cemetery is of local Historic significance. Consisting of only one
headstone, it commemorates the settling of the Gange family close to the vicinity of the
Cemetery. John Thomas Mitchell Gange was granted this parcel of land in the mid 1860's by
the Drysdale family of "Coryule" for whom he had worked as Foreman for some
years. The Headstone commemorates his passing in 1868, his wife's passing in 1882 and the
tragic loss of their three children between 1848 and 1855. (11)
The inscription on this headstone reads :-
Erected / by / Margaret / In memory of her beloved husband / John Thomas Mitchell /
Gange / who died June 2nd 1868 / Aged 59 years / also of their beloved sons /
James Thomas / who was drowned Nov 13th 1849 / aged 12 years & 8 months /
Thomas James / Died April 18th 1852 Aged 10 mths / Daniel Bacchus / Died Jan
1855 / Aged 18 mths / and / Margaret Gange / Died Oct 2nd 1882 / Aged 73 yrs.
From the inscription it can be presumed that the headstone was erected after 1868 and
before Margaret's death in 1882, with her death details added later. The question should
also be subsequently asked - who, if anyone is buried beneath this headstone?
It is possible that the location of this headstone was called "Mt. Mitchell"
after John Thomas Mitchell GANGE, hence the two boys burial record stated "Mt.
Mitchell, Bellarine Peninsula". What then is the explanation for "Mt. Mitchell
Cemetery, Newington" on the burial records for Joseph CHAMBERS and Priscilla (Baby)
LUCKOW?
To complicate this issue even further, the Shire of Bellarine Valuation records for
1888/89 show an entry for 28 acres near the properties of FOX, FERRIS, CHAMBERS, LUCKOW
and THOMAS. These 28 acres are identified as "pt Gharinghill estate". Is this
yet another link to the GANGE family and "Mt. Mitchell". We may never know the
answer to this puzzle but it was considered worth including the entries for the four GANGE
death and burial records which have been located during the Newington Cemetery Research.
The question must be asked - are at least two of the GANGE family buried in the
Newington Cemetery? The information is too vague to be included in the main list of
Possible / Confirmed burials in Newington, however they cannot be ignored as
"possibles".
The following table gives the details of the GANGE deaths.

In addition to the details provided in this section, all names, births, deaths,
marriages and burials of Newington families mentioned in the "Chambers
Chronicles" or extracted from the Victorian Pioneer BDMs or Cemetery indexes, have
been entered into a database using Reunion for Windows.
The list and details are too extensive to include in this document, however a copy will
be printed and lodged with the Bellarine Historical Society for future reference. It is
worthwhile however to include here "Person Reports" extracted from the Reunion
database for those identified as Possible or Confirmed burials in the Newington Cemetery.

| Notes: |
During Susanna's lifetime the graveyard was fenced and she
grew flowers and herbs there. She was known as a midwife and is said to have made a very
soothing ointment from her herbs. She could not write but somebody had picked out with
small stones a text from Jeremiah 8.22 : "Is there no balm in Gilead, is there no
physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?"
This quotation becomes more poignant with the knowledge that Susanna's youngest daughter,
Priscilla, who suicided in 1887, is also buried here in this cemetery, along with two of
her babies. |
