Extracted from publication with permission of the author.  Records originally appeared in various sources including:

  1. 1837-1851: Australian Archives Brighton - names of PMs as per the outward Letter Books of the Chief Postmaster
  2. 1851-1863: Colony of Victoria Civil Establishment Lists (Blue Books) - this period covered all Post Offices.
  3. 1864-1868: Australian Archives Brighton - lists of names submitted to the Colonian Secretary for approval.
  4. 1868-1883: Victorian Parliamentary Papers - Annual Post Office Reports - this period covered all Post Offices.
  5. 1868-1901: Australian Archives Brighton - lists of names submitted to the Colonial Secretary for approval.  Relates to small Post Offices only.
  6. 1884-1900: Colony of Victoria Civil Establishment Lists (Blue Books) - this period only covered the larger Post Offices.
  7. 1880-1899: Municipal Directories - not always accurate, but usually confirm (5) and (6) above.

IMPORTANT: the location of the above items have changed since this book was published in 1987.
