Most local Historical Societies and
Family History Groups will have copies of cemetery records / burial registers.
For more on-line and
off-line information on the burials, people, places and cemeteries see
MORE INFORMATION?
N.B. If you have checked the Cemetery
Records and can't find what you're looking for - it's always worth asking the Geelong and District Mailing List as some of the members on that
list were responsible for creating some of the lists of records - they may have more local
knowledge to help you.

NOTES - PLEASE READ!
- LOCATION MAPS
: The links are
to Municipal Planning Scheme Maps.
- Take note of the Map Code shown
below (i.e. Map 52, Map 77HO etc.)
- Click on the Location Map link -
or right click and "Open in new window"
- On the Municipal Map click on
the relevant Map code to view the Acrobat (.pdf) file
- Cemeteries are identified in
YELLOW with the code PUZ5, or an HO number for those with a
Map Code of nnHO.
- GEELONG & DISTRICT : The
area covered by the Geelong & District has furry boundaries
however it generally covers the area in an arc from Cape Otway to
south of Ballarat to Werribee. For areas further west, use Ian
Marr's Cemeteries of SW Victoria.
- SITE PLANS : These plans
will help you with the general layout but you cannot rely on them
to find burials with no headstone. Also many cemeteries do
not have row or plot numbers on display. Plans are in
Acrobat (.pdf) format.
- ON-LINE INDEXES : Some of
these have been created from monumental inscriptions and therefore
will not include people buried in the cemetery and not identified
on headstones. All cemeteries that are On-Line are included
in the searchable Consolidated Burials / Headstones Index. NOTE : some of
the Burials files are
being updated from time to time - date of creation appears at the
bottom of Burials reports.
- DATA : Every effort has been
made to ensure correctness of data however please consult original
records before taking any action on results. Many cemeteries
have incomplete or missing registers and burial lists have been
recreated from multiple sources - if you have more complete
information please let me know
so the files and registers can be updated.
- WORK IN PROGRESS : More maps,
plans and information are yet to be added to this table. If
you have produced a list of Burials or Headstone Transcriptions
that you would like to contribute to this project please
contact me.
- WARNING : Some of the On-Line
files of burials and Site Plans are LARGE Acrobat (.pdf) files -
please be patient!
-
MISSING ENTRIES : There are
burials in the various cemeteries that may not be on this
database. There are multiple reasons but generally it is because
the available records and research have not found these burials.
If you are able to provide information about missing burials please let
me know and I will pass it on to the relevant organisation / trustees
etc.
-
THANK YOU : A special
thank you to : Dianne Hughes for supplying multiple Headstone
Transcription and Burial files; Ian Marr for allowing us to include his
entries in the Consolidated database for searching; Pam Jennings for
photos, plans and data; members of the Geelong Family History Group and
numerous others who have contributed to this project.

The
earliest recorded burial for Bambra is 1868. As the cemetery was
gazetted in 1866 there may be earlier burials which were not
recorded. The original burial register is held by the Geelong
Heritage Centre but the register the cemetery used was destroyed in a
bush fire in the 1950s. Bambra Cemetery register was rebuilt
using the original registers and the Victorian Death registers.
Bambra didn't have a Deputy Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages
therefore all registrations were recorded in towns around the Otways
such as Deans Marsh, Birregurra, Colac and Winchelsea - the record of
burials was hard to find! |

Bruces
Creek was the original name for Bannockburn after the BRUCE Brothers
who had the original run covering the area. A
Cemetery was was set aside as a temporary reserve in 1857 "at
Murgheboluc" however it is believed that this was referred to as
Murgheboluc because it was in the Parish of that name. Research
by many people indicates that cemeteries referred to as Murgheboluc,
Wabdallah and Leigh Road are the cemetery now known as
Bannockburn. The first burial appears to have been in
1860. Earlier burials for deaths in the region were generally at
Eastern or Western Geelong cemeteries although some may be at Bruces
Creek. It isn't clear where the Bruces Creek Cemetery was
located - some burials stated to be at Bruces Creek have headstones in
the Lethbridge Cemetery however the location of others is not
known. The Bannockburn Cemetery was not officially permanently
gazetted until 1983. Some years ago the cemetery was vandalised
and some of the larger and imposing headstones were badly damaged. |

On
the 10th November 1855 a meeting was held at the "Race
Course" hotel, Ceres, to discuss the establishment of a
cemetery. Early settlers had established vineyards, sheep farms,
quarrying and cropping. Of the 220 original families to settle
the area, 52 (almost a quarter) came from the south-west counties of
England (Devon, Cornwall and Somerset); 48 from other English
counties; 36 from Switzerland; 24 from Scotland; and 60 from
Ireland. The Trustees applied for a Government grant which
enabled a Sexton's office to be built, fences and gates erected and
insurance against bushfires! No doubt the horror of Black
Thursday 1850 was still fresh in residents' minds! Thomas GODIN,
a native of Salisbury, Wiltshire, was appointed the first Sexton. |

The
earliest existing burial register gives the first burial in the
cemetery as 1861 but it appears that the secretary attempted to trace
known burials as far back as 1855 and there are records, at the
Government Statist, of burials in 1854. In 1986 the Shire of
Bellarine took over the administration of the cemetery and on the 1st
January 1995, this transferred to the Geelong Cemeteries Trust.
A section of the cemetery was set aside for residents of the United
Service Home. |

St
David's Lutheran Church, Freshwater Creek, was originally known as
"Waldkirch" - Church in the Woods. The first structure of
wattle and daub, with paling and shingle roof, was built by the
congregation in 1859. This was replaced by a bluestone structure in
1868. Services were held in German, and the Church became the cultural
and religious centre for the first generation of German immigrants. In
1951 the German connection was severed, and the Church was renamed St.
David's. |

The
first recorded burial was that of Hugh NIVEN on the 23rd September
1839. Sections of the cemetery were originally administered by
the main denominational churches, each with their own Sexton and
gravediggers. In 1877 a General Trust was formed and in 1907 the
Roman Catholic and Jewish sections also joined. The Eastern
cemetery (along with Mt Moriac cemetery) were the only ones to have
consecrated ground for Catholic burials so most Catholic burials, even
from the outlying areas of Geelong, were performed at these
cemeteries. The cemetery is
the oldest working cemetery in our State and today is administered by
the Geelong Cemeteries Trust. NOTE : The following "cemetery

Situated in Burvilles
Road, Mt Duneed, the crematorium services Geelong and its district,
extending as far as Apollo Bay, Lethbridge, Lara and of course the
Bellarine Peninsula. The grounds consist of a Chapel and lounges where
families may hold a service, two state of the art cremators and
landscaped gardens with a native bushland theme. The first cremation
took place on 21 April 1988. Prior to Geelong having its own
crematorium, many Geelong families used the services at Ballarat,
Altona, Fawkner and the Necropolis – this may explain for those
seeking ancestors who died in Geelong but cannot be found in our
records.
In 2004, BURIALS have commenced in new lawn headstone and bronze
plaque areas. Families in Grovedale and the Surfcoast districts now
have a cemetery within their area, or in fact anyone that seeks a
peaceful, natural setting. The grounds also provide for the
placing of cremated remains in garden settings and a Book of
Remembrance is available in the Chapel foyer for memorialisation.

The
Western Cemetery was originally established to service the burial
needs of those living in the western part of Geelong, as well as the
outlying areas of Fyansford, Batesford, and those living and working
on the Moorabool Viaduct. The first burial took place in
1858. In the 1850s, Geelong West supported many of the poorer
families of Geelong. Land was cheap and landowners could afford
to erect mean dwellings and sell and rent them cheaply. As many
families could not afford burial costs, the cemetery had a regulation
where a family could have one month to pay for the cost of a grave and
burial, and failing to do so by this time saw the grave revert to a
"public" grave. The land set aside for Roman Catholic
burials was not greatly used during the early years as the land was
unconsecrated. NOTE : The
following "cemetery names" usually refer to Geelong Western
Cemetery: Geelong New; Geelong New General; Herne Hill; Ashby;
Newtown. |

In
December 1849 Dr Thomson (one of Geelong's first settlers arranged for
at least 20 German immigrants (and their children) to come to Port
Phillip aboard the "Emmy" and establish a German village
within the neighbourhood of Geelong. Those aboard included the
BIESKE, BAENSCH, KERGER, Winter, and BOEHM families. The area
soon became known as "Germantown". Most of the
settlers were Lutherans from a small area of Prussia east of Berlin on
the River Oder, but others were from various parts of Germany.
The original settlers soon encouraged other family members and friends
to join them in the colony. Church services were held in homes
until land was purchased in Church Street in 1854 where a school was
built with the cemetery located beside it. Services were then
held in the school until 1859 when a Lutheran Church was built.
The records of the cemetery no longer exist prior to 1894 and details
of burials have been gleaned from existing headstones, death
certificates, and death notices from the "Geelong
Advertiser". Most of the older headstone inscriptions are
in German and are headed Hier Ruhet in Gott which means
"Here rests in God". Birth dates as well as death
dates are usually inscribed. There are some misspellings on the
headstones probably due to non-German stonemasons doing the
engraving. In 1869 German families at Waldkirch (Freshwater
Creek) established their own church (now called St David's) as
well as a cemetery within the church grounds. In 1915 the name
of Germantown was changed to Grovedale because of the strong
anti-German feelings of the Australian community during the First
World War. |

The
township originally straddled the Geelong to Ballarat Road to service
the stream of eager prospectors, coaches and carters' wagons heading
to and from the goldfields. When the construction of the railway
commenced in 1858 the main works depot was established at Lethbridge
for a four year period. This resulted in a sudden influx of
hundreds of workers and their families into the area. The
cemetery was officially proclaimed in August 1859. Because of
the railway camps and the poor living conditions, the first pages of
the register contain the names of children generally under 6 years of
age. The original cemetery was on the west bank of Bruces Creek
where the Recreation Reserve is now located. |

Meredith,
one of the first three towns in Victoria, was originally called
Watsons after William WATSON and is located almost half way between
Ballarat and Geelong. It was an important camping place for
police and people going to and from the goldfields of Buninyong and
Ballarat. Meredith Cemetery was officially opened on the present
site in 1861. Prior to that there was a cemetery across
Collebarghurk Creek. The first burials for this cemetery were in
1855. A large number of early burials came from an area of
goldfields near Morrison - Moorabool Diggings, Burnt Bridge and Stony
Rises. As the register is incomplete before 1903 it is difficult
to know the exact number of burials. There was a large
population of Free Presbyterians at Meredith and most seem to have
come from the Highland and Islands of Scotland. |

Mt
Duneed cemetery opened in 1864. A 'live fence' of South
Australian Kangaroo acacia was planted around the cemetery
perimeter. Two lengths of post and rail were erected either side
of the gates to enable horses to be tethered. NOTE: Burials in Duneed Cemetery
before that date probably refer to the Mt Moriac Cemetery, originally
called Duneed. Beware that the name Duneed may have been used
for some time after 1864 and could refer to Mt Moriac, or may have
been used as an abbreviation for Mt Duneed. |

This
cemetery was initially called Duneed however when the Mt Duneed
cemetery opened in 1864 the name was changed to Mt Moriac. The
Mount Moriac and Geelong Eastern Cemetery were the only ones to have
consecrated ground for Catholic burials so most Catholic burials, even
from the outlying areas of Geelong, were performed at these
cemeteries. NOTE : Beware that the name Duneed may have been used for some time after
that date and could refer to Mt Moriac, or may have been used as an
abbreviation for Mt Duneed. |

The
Newington Cemetery is located on the property once owned by Edmund
"Ned" FERRIS. Joseph and Susannah CHAMBERS were
friends and in 1856 joined Ned on his farm at Newington on the
Bellarine Peninsula. Following the death of Joseph CHAMBERS, his
wife Susannah married Ned FERRIS. Susannah was a midwife and
also referred to as the "Herb Lady" - when medical help was
needed, locals came to Susannah first before making the arduous trip
over bad roads to Drysdale or Geelong. Susannah soon became
known as "Granny Ferris". When family members died in
the early years, Susannah would have had the skills to "lay them
out" and hence they were buried on their property rather than
taken to Drysdale or Leopold Cemeteries. The first Wesleyan
Church at Newington was also much closer to the family cemetery than
the present Uniting Church. Although
roads improved, burials of some immediate and extended family
continued in this private cemetery until 1887. For many years,
this burial site has been referred to by locals as "Granny Ferris
and a couple of babies are buried on PACEY's Hill". |

The
earliest existing 'register', consisting of loose sheets from a
once-bound register, gives the first burial as 1878 although graves
appear to have been sold as early as 1875. The earliest mention
of the cemetery in the Government Gazette is 1879. On
1 January 1872, the Shire of Bellarine took over the administration of
the cemetery and on the 1 January 1995, this transferred to the
Geelong Cemeteries Trust. |

The
first Queenscliffe burials were in the sand dunes to the south of the
town. The current ("new") cemetery was gazetted
in 1857 and some of the remains from the sand dunes were re-interred
to the new cemetery at Point Lonsdale in 1860. A section of the
cemetery was set aside for burials from Fort Queenscliff. |

The
first recorded burial was in 1855 although land was not officially
reserved for the cemetery until 1872. In the early days deaths
for Rokewood were registered under Corindhap, Kuruc-a-ruc and Mindai
(became Pitfield). Other early burials possibly not included in
the Burials list may have been for Spring Creek (Dereel) or some of
the surrounding goldfields. The Burial Register was destroyed in
the 1944 bush fires when the then Secretary's house was
destroyed. The Register from then is as complete as
possible. Some of the unaccounted burials in this cemetery were
for infants or stillborn babies as well as deaths in the nearby
goldfields which may not have been registered. |

A
group of Mercy Sisters from Dublin arrived in Geelong on December 3,
1859. In March 1860,
with assistance from a local subscription committee, the Sisters
purchased a brick house called 'Sunville' on Newtown Hill, previously
owned by the late Hon. G.F. BELCHER. Prior to this, the Sisters
took charge of the girls at St Augustine's, with two Mercy sisters
residing there until 1862 when the girls were removed to Our Lady's
Orphanage adjacent to the convent at Newtown. The first burial
in the convent cemetery was Sister Mary Gertrude O'FARRELL on August
8, 1878. Although the law regarding private cemeteries and/or
burials was changed in 1886, there were further burials until
1897. Between 1898 and 1951 the nuns were buried in a special
section of the Geelong Eastern Cemetery, h | |
