• Biography. Uncle Rose and Aunty Charlie (what I always used to call them!) lived at Glendon Brook Bob Graham came to live with Charles and Rose at Glendonbrook - he was a Barnardo boy. Undated newspaper report - FIRE AT SINGLETON, Singleton, Tuesday. The residence of Mr. Charles Robert Stapleton, of Glendonbrook, has been destroyed by fire. It was a seven-roomed weatherboard structure, with wash-house adjoining. Mr. Stapleton was awakened by the crackling of fire about 1.30 a.m and he tried to extinguish the outbreak with buckets of water, but the flames had got a good hold, and soon the whole building and contents were consumed. It is surmised that the fire was due to rats getting hold of some loose matches. The building, which was valued at £800, was insured for £440, and the furniture and contents, valued at £300, were insured for £200, with the Farmers and Settlers' Co-operative Insurance Company. Undated newspaper report - GLENDONBROOK COUPLE CELEBRTE 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. (1971) Lifelong residents of Glendonbrook, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stapleton, were guests-of-honour at a party in the Elderslie Hall on Saturday night to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Some 130 guests attended the function which was organised chiefly by Mr. and Mrs. Stapleton's daughter-in-law, Mrs. Harold Stapleton, of Elderslie. Mr. and Mrs. Stapleton were married on the 28th June, 1911, in All Saints' Parish Hall. At the time, the present All Saint's Church was being built and the former church had been demolished to make way for the new building. The late Rev. Kirkwood officiated at the marriage ceremony. Among the numerous messages of congratulations the popular couple received to mark their diamond wedding anniversary, were telegrams from the Queen, the Governor-General (Sir Paul Hasluck), the Prime Minister (Mr. McMahon), the Governor (Sir Roden Cutler), the Premier (Mr. Askin) and the Member for Paterson (Mr. O'Keefe). Mrs. Stapleton was formerly Miss Rose Burgmann, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Burgmann of Glendonbrook. The couple have lived all their lives at Glendonbrook. Mr. Stapleton is now 84 and Mrs. Stapleton is 82. They both enjoy good health and lead active lives. Mr. Stapleton maintains an active role on the land and his wife still keeps house for the both. They have six children: Harold (Elderslie), Neville (Cheshunt), Joyce (Mrs. J. Gate, Singleton), Wally (Scott's Flat), Allan (Tarro) and Olive (Mrs. M. Tacon, Dee Why). There are 24 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Guests travelled from Sydney, Blacktown, Newcastle, Belmont, Singleton, Wauchope, Stroud and the local districts to attend the function on Saturday night. As the guests-of-honour entered the hall they were presented with a shoulder spray and a button hole by a granddaughter, Rhonda Stapleton, and a great granddaughter, Susanne Stapleton. The gathering sat down to enjoy a delicious hot meal. Mrs. Harold Stapleton was assisted here by the ladies present and Miss Jean Thrift, of Elderslie, who received a small presentation from Mrs. Stapleton in appreciation. Mr. Bob Graham was chairman for the formal part of the proceedings and the toast to Mr. and Mrs. Stapleton was proposed by Mr. Bill Paterson, of Cardiff. Mr. Bill Pedelty, of Kahibah, proposed the toast to the bridal group. Mr. Stapleton's best man of 60 years ago, Mr. Alec Burnmann, of Newcastle, was present but the groomsman, Mr. Arthur Woods, of Whittingham was unable to be present. Mrs. Stapleton's bridesmaids, Mrs. Lill Woods and Mrs. Lill Wilson, are both deceased. Mr. Stapleton very ably responded to the toasts. A presentation from their children was made by Mr. Harold Stapleton and one on behalf of the grand children was made by Bruce Stapleton, of Cheshunt. The couple also received numerous beautiful and practical gifts from the guests and well-wishers. The anniversary cake was made by Mrs. Harold Stapleton and beautifully decorated by Mrs. Madge Pedelty. After the formal part of the proceedings had concluded, the hall was cleared for dancing to music provided by Mrs. Gwen Hartcher and Mrs. Shirley Smith both of Branxton. This was interspersed with items by several guests, including a very enjoyable act billed as the "Papworth Girls". The elderly guests were content to sit and enjoy the entertainment as well as a great deal of reminiscing and chatting with old friends. After supper, a rousing rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" by all present brought a very enjoyable 60th wedding anniversary celebration to a close. |
