bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• Immigration, Abt 1859, New South Wales, Australia. 3 From death certificate: How long in the Australasian Colonies or States: about 60 years [about 60 = guess]. NOTE: Place of birth given as England and age 83 which does not match information given on 2 marriage certificates and daughter's birth certificate, therefore years in the colony and age very suspect.

NOTE: William Robert McCAY arriving in Victoria in 1861 on the Queen of the Mersey is the right name and approximate age however it states that he is Scottish. It is possible that this is where he travelled from and not his country of birth - only a handful of Scots on this ship. No other references found to William Robert McCAY in Victorian BDM indexes.

• Death notice, 5 Jul 1919, Taree, New South Wales, Australia. 9 Sudden death at Taree
Mr W R McCAY
Mr W R McCay, a well known resident of Tuncurry and surrounding districts, died at Fotheringham's Hotel, Taree, on Monday evening while sitting at tea.

An inquest was held on Wednesday by Mr G B Morris, district coroner.

Miss May Jones, manageress of the hotel, deposed that the deceased, who had frequently stayed at the hotel, engaged a room, and later on she saw him sitting at the tea table. Later, witness heard a sound, and, looking round, saw that deceased had fallen with his head on his plate. Mr Fotheringham went to his assistance.

Arthur James Fotheringham, licenses of the hotel, deposed that deceased came to his hotel and said he had walked from Brown's Creek, or the factory, a distance of about two miles, carrying a hamper. When the deceased was sitting at tea witness heard a noise and saw deceased with his face on his plate. He was carried to a room and laid on a bed. Continuing, witness said: I then communicated with the doctor and the police, and I afterwards saw the body taken away by police to the hospital morgue. I had never seen the deceased under the influence of liquor, but he was not a total abstainer.

Constable Alford gave evidence that he was with Dr Stokes when the body was examined, and there were no external marks of violence on the body.

Dr Stokes gave evidence that in his opinion death was due to natural causes, and a verdict to that effect was recorded.

The deceased gentleman was a highly-respected man of more than ordinary ability, and years ago did a good deal of literary work, and was a picturesque and forceful writer. He was 83 years of age.

Messrs F and W McCay, of Pampoolah, are sons of the deceased.
