Information from Patricia Parker - George WYLIE : By the time George was 6 his father Adam was a drunkard and had deserted the family, and his mother Catherine McGANN was in gaol. George was put into the Benevolent Society, along with his brothers and sisters, and on 21 August 1878 they were transferred to the Randwick Childrens Asylum. He stayed there until he was 12 and did his schooling. He was boarded out to a Mr Maxted on 18 December 1884. He was then boarded out to Mr McMahon in the south coast district, whilst there he lost an eye in a fight with another boy with a bullock whip and was taken to Moorcliffe Hospital in Sydney for treatment. He then went to a 'cottage home' at Mittagong. About 1888-89 he was sent from the Sate Children's Relief Department to Mr Hart, a farmer. After being there for 8 monts, he and another boy ran away in 27 July 1889, taking with them possessions, whips and other articles. He was arrested by Constable Miles at Woollongong on 15 August 1889, charged with being a vagrant, having no fixed place of abode and complaints about his conduct from Mr Hart did not help the situation. he was placed on the detention ship "Vernon" for about 9 months and a situation was procured for him in April 1890. In 1899 he married Hannah SCHUBERT, he was 27 and Hannah 34, both were living at 34 Pyrmont Bridge Road, Sydney and he working as a dealer in oysters. It is not known if there were children born of this marriage but family myth has it that there was possibly Ena and Gladys. He was divorced from Hannah on 17 December 1912 and married Eva Elizabeth SCHUBERT on 7 January 1913, he was 40 and she was 32 and they were both living at 77 O'Connell Street, Newtown where he was working as a tailor. He died 28 April 1936 aged 64 in the western suburbs hospital at Enfield - usually resided at Burwood. He was an invalid pensioner and died of acute cardiac failure, chronic myocardytis and arterialsclorisis. He is buried in the Roman Catholic Section at Rookwood Cemetery. George and Eva had 9 children : Mona, George, Alfred, Joseph, Kathleen, Hazel Margaret (Pat Parker's mother), Arthur and Joyce (twins), Alexander (still alive in 1997 living with his wife, Ethel, at 59 Manoa Rd, Budgewoi NSW 2262. His daughter June has done a great deal of family history with me and cousin Hazel Loreton. My father always said that George was an angry and miserable man and I can understand that being abandoned by his family when he was so young, separated from his brothers and sisters, and living in the harshest of conditions for most of his life, that it would not encourage a great sense of humour. His occupation as Tailor is interesting because it is one of the skills which they taught the boys at the Randwick Asylum - in fact, the boys were responsible for making all the childrens clothes and the girls did the cooking and washing. George never spoke of his childhood to his family and none knew that he had been orphaned. George married Johanna [Hanna] SCHUBERT, daughter of Franz Wilhelm [Wilhelm] SCHUBART and Eva Catharina [Catharina] MARTIN, on 23 Oct 1899 in Independent Presbyterian Church, Pitt St, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.1 The marriage ended in divorce. (Johanna [Hanna] SCHUBERT was born on 19 Jul 1861 in Jones Island, Manning River, New South Wales, Australia,6 died on 31 Jul 1934 in Taree, New South Wales, Australia 7 and was buried in Aug 1934 in Oxley Island Cemetery, Oxley Island, New South Wales, Australia 3.)
George next married Elizabeth Eva SCHUBERT, daughter of Joseph SCHUBERT and Lucy CLAYDON, on 7 Jan 1913 in 77 O'Connell St, Newtown, New South Wales, Australia.2 (Elizabeth Eva SCHUBERT was born on 31 Mar 1880 in Forster, Manning River, New South Wales, Australia, died in Jan 1933 and was buried in RC Cemetery, Rookwood, New South Wales, Australia.) |
