• Biography. James married Elizabeth when he was 18 and she was 28. She was also about 4 months pregnant. Perhaps because of the scandal, the couple left Scotland and came to Australia by ship. The baby was born on board the ship as it passed Stradbroke Island, Qld. James found employment as a farm labourer where they lived at Sandy Creek, Upper Albert River, Logan, near Tamborine Village, Qld, until he took up a position with the North Queensland Pastoral Company at Inkerman Station in 1883. Inkerman Station was a huge sugar cane plantation near Ayr, North Qld. The voyage was made in a small boat when daugher Jessie was 11 years old. They stayed at Inkerman for many years.
